{"id":373,"date":"2013-10-11T00:00:05","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T21:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.myscience.fi\/en\/?p=373"},"modified":"2017-06-15T16:56:46","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T13:56:46","slug":"luma-celebrated-european-biotech-week-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.myscience.fi\/en\/news\/2013\/10\/11\/luma-celebrated-european-biotech-week-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"LUMA Celebrated European Biotech Week 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Biotech Week of 2013 was highlighted at Finland\u2019s Science Education Centre\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LUMA<\/span>\u00a0with a variety of activities including workshops, themed articles and an on-line competition.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">LUMA<\/span>\u00a0offered plenty of activities during the Eruopean Biotech Week from September 30th to October 4th 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Interactive workshops were organized every evening at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinki.fi\/en\/science-education\/for-teachers\/group-visits-to-science-labs\/chemistrylab-gadolin\">Chemistry Lab Gadolin<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LUMARTS<\/span>\u00a0laboratory at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/luma.aalto.fi\/en\/\"><span class=\"caps\">LUMA<\/span>\u00a0Centre Aalto<\/a>\u00a0to introduce teachers to practical and engaging biotechnology experiments. Workshop topics included building a functional electrophoresis machinery from simple kitchenware, biochemical separation and filtering techniques for milk and microbiology approaches to enzyme production.<\/p>\n<p>An on-line competition was launched with a multiple-choice question on biotechnology appearing daily. Questions were designed to engage young people into thinking about everyday applications of biotechnology.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, biotechnology-themed articles were published in the Finnish-language\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LUMA-s<\/span>anomat\u00a0webmagazine to support teachers with up-to-date information and to provide source material for classroom use.
