From a long-term perspective, Helsinki’s ranking can be considered rather stable. The ranking of the University of Helsinki on the list, compiled ten times, has varied between 69 and 76.
Ulla-Maija Forsberg, First Vice-Rector at the University of Helsinki, is delighted over the improvement of the rank.
“If we are to move one place, it’s nice that we’re going in a positive direction,” Forsberg says.
She remarks that rankings on the Shanghai list are relatively stable. There are no major leaps year after year.
Five Finnish universities in the top 500
Four other Finnish universities also made it to the best 500 universities on the list. The Universities of Oulu and Turku are ranked 301–400 among the evaluated universities. The Universities of Eastern Finland and Jyväskylä, on the other hand, ranked in the range of 401–500.
Altogether, there are around 15,000 universities in the world.
With regard to other Nordic top universities, Karolinska Institutet in Sweden was ranked number 42, University of Copenhagen 44, University of Oslo 67, while Uppsala University shared the 73rd position with Helsinki.
“In that respect, one could consider that we still have some catching up to do,” Forsberg admits.
English prevails
Harvard from the United States was ranked the best university in the world, to no one’s surprise. The top ten included eight US and two British universities.
The highest-ranking non-English-speaking university was the University of Tokyo, which made it to the 20th position.
When evaluating exclusively non-English-speaking universities, the University of Helsinki shared the 16th position.
